Introduction: Why Use BIAN in Ardoq?

The Banking Industry Architecture Network (BIAN) defines a standardized way of looking at a bank's functions. BIAN provides a comprehensive Business Capability Model and defines a Service Landscape that breaks down financial activities into discrete "business capacity building blocks" called BIAN Service Domains.

The Business Capabilities map shows the functional layers of what the bank can do, the specific activities like processing a payment or defining a policy.

The Business Domains map shows the major organizational capacities (Service Landscape) responsible for those actions, like 'Products' or 'Finance And Risk Management'.

Using industry standards like BIAN helps your organization:

β€’ Accelerate Delivery: Provides a validated foundation, speeding up design time.

β€’ Increase Consistency: Establishes a common language and standardized building blocks across your organization.

β€’ Ensure Alignment: Helps ensure that technology investments support business capabilities and strategic goals.

In Ardoq, we integrate the BIAN model to give you a quick starting point for mapping your enterprise architecture. By importing both, you can trace the entire connection from high-level capacity down to the detailed function, ready for integration with your applications and IT assets.

How Ardoq Adopts the BIAN v12 Model

In Ardoq, the BIAN model structure is organized into two main workspaces so that you can easily integrate these components with the rest of your architecture models (such as applications, projects, and organizational units). For more information regarding BIAN v12.0 Reference Model Overview, please visit their Architecture Overview Portal.

Importing the BIAN Model into Ardoq

The Frameworks & Resource Importer tool helps you load preconfigured reference information, such as the BIAN model, easily and quickly. Using this importer reduces the time and effort needed for manual data entry and configuration.

For more information on how to use Ardoq's Frameworks & Resources Importer, please follow the guide How to use the Frameworks & Resources Importer.

Unlocking the BIAN Framework

While the BIAN (Banking Industry Architecture Network) capability model and related resources are freely available to the public. Ardoq initially locks this resource to ensure users understand its complexity before importing it. This prevents errors and maintains the quality of the data in your Ardoq organization.

If the BIAN model appears greyed out in the Frameworks & Resources Importer, you must validate your knowledge of the framework to gain access.

You can unlock the BIAN resource by confirming your understanding with your Ardoq point of contact through one of these two paths:

  1. Certification: Provide proof of a relevant BIAN certification (e.g., BIAN Banking Architecture Foundation certification).

  2. Review: Read this documentation to understand the model's structure and then speak with your Ardoq representative, either support or CSM to confirm your grasp of how the model should be applied.

Once your knowledge is validated, Ardoq will enable the BIAN resource specifically for your organization.
