Copying Components Between Workspaces with Drag-and-Drop

Written by Uday Yeluri

Important Considerations

Before proceeding, please be aware of the following:

  • Copy, not Move: This process creates a copy of the component in the target workspace. You will need to manually delete the original component from the source workspace if you wish to move it completely.

  • Manual Component Type Update: The component type is copied along with the component and will need to be manually updated in the target workspace to match the desired type.

  • Bulk Updates: For efficiency, use Data Inventory to update component types in bulk.

  • Metamodel Cleanup: After copying, remember to delete any unused component types that were brought over to the target workspace's metamodel.

  • New IDs and OIDs: When copying components, please note that the target workspace will automatically generate new Ardoq IDs and OIDs. These are unique identifiers and are not transferred from the source.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Open Workspaces: Open both the source workspace (containing the components to be copied) and the target workspace in Ardoq's workspace view.

  2. Drag and Drop:

    • Locate the desired component(s) in the source workspace's left sidebar menu.

    • Click and drag the component(s) to the target workspace's left sidebar menu.

    • To copy multiple components at once, hold down the 'Cmd' key (Mac) or 'Shift'/'Ctrl' key + mouse click (Windows) while clicking the components.

  3. Confirmation: Upon dropping the component(s) in the target workspace, Ardoq will display a confirmation dialog. Click "Copy" to proceed.

  4. Verification:

    • After the copy is complete, verify that the components and their references appear correctly in the target workspace.

    • If necessary, delete the original components from the source workspace.

Additional Tips

  • Familiarize yourself with Data Inventory to efficiently manage component types.

  • Maintain a clean metamodel in the target workspace by removing any unnecessary component types.

By following these steps, you can leverage drag-and-drop to streamline the process of copying components between workspaces in Ardoq.
