The Banking Industry Architecture Network (BIAN) defines a standardized way of looking at a bank's functions. BIAN maintains two separate, non-overlapping models:

The Business Capability Map is a strategic view of what the bank does, structured as a nested hierarchy of Business Capabilities from broad to specific, and driven by banking strategy rather than technology.

The Service Domain Landscape is an IT and architecture view of how the bank is built, breaking financial activities down into discrete, non-overlapping capacity building blocks called BIAN Service Domains, driven by information system strategy.

These two models relate to each other many-to-many. A single business capability can draw on multiple Service Domains, and a single Service Domain can support multiple capabilities, but neither is a subset of the other.
