Manage datasets in the Datasets panel

See what each dataset in your view contains, and change its context, references and paths without leaving the view.

The Datasets panel shows every dataset loaded in your view as a card. Use it to see what a dataset contains, change its context components, add or remove references, and hide, collapse or close it. The view updates as you work.

When to use this: Use the panel to adjust the data in a view you are already exploring. To build a dataset step by step from scratch, or to change filters, required paths and collapsed paths, use the Viewpoint builder (see Fine-tune a dataset in the Viewpoint builder below).

Before you begin

  • You're working in a view in Viewpoint mode.

  • The improved dataset definition is turned on for your organization. If your panel doesn't look like the one described here, ask your admin.

  • To create components from the view, you need edit rights on the workspace you create them in.

Open the panel

When you're in a view, click the datasets button in the toolbar above the view. The button shows how many datasets are loaded, for example 1 dataset.

The panel opens on the left with two tabs:

  • Datasets: one card per dataset.

  • Components: every component open in the dataset, grouped by workspace.

Click Close (×) in the panel header to close it.

Understand a dataset card

What you see

What it means

13 components

How many components the dataset brings into the view. The number updates as you change references.

Eye

Hides or shows the dataset in the view.

Collapse dataset / Expand dataset

Folds the card so only the context row shows. This changes the panel only, not the view.

Gear (Viewpoint builder)

Opens the dataset in the Viewpoint builder.

Close dataset (×)

Closes the dataset. There is no confirmation.

2 filters applied

The number of filter rules set on the context type.

Collapsed paths

Appears when the dataset has a collapsed path. Each path has a switch.

Technical Capability (13)

The context type and how many context components are in the dataset.

13 Technical Capabilities

The selected context components. Click to change the selection.

→ Is Realized By, Application (20)

A reference you follow from the context. The arrow shows the direction: forward is outgoing, back is incoming. The number is the count of components inside this dataset.

Hover over a row to see + (add a reference after this one) and × (remove this reference).

Add a dataset

You have two ways to add a dataset to a view.

From the panel:

  1. Click Add dataset (+) at the top of the panel.

  2. In Select context, choose the components you want to start from. See Change the context components below.

  3. Click Open N components.

From a component in the view:

  1. Right-click a component.

  2. Select Add dataset to view.

  3. Choose one of:

    • Open new dataset from selection adds a dataset with that component as context. The new card shows Add references to see connections. Click it to pick references.

    • Apply a saved viewpoint loads a saved viewpoint with that component as context.

Change the context components

The context components are the components your dataset starts from.

  1. On the context row of a card, click the pencil (Edit dataset). The panel switches to Select context.

  2. Choose a mode:

    • Search: pick a component type, or leave All component types, and type in Search component name.

    • Advanced: click Edit rules. In Add advanced search rules, choose whether components must match all or any of the rules, then set a Type, an operator and a value for each rule. Click Add rule for more, or Add subquery for a nested set. Click See results.

  3. Tick the components you want. Select all ticks every result.

  4. Click Save changes.

Click Back (the arrow at the top) to leave without saving.

Notes

  • Switching between Search and Advanced clears your current selection. Check the "N selected" count before you save.

  • If your context holds more than one component type, the card shows 2 component types selected. You can't add references to a mixed context, and the Viewpoint picker in the toolbar is disabled. Edit the dataset to select components of one type.

Add references

  1. Click + on the context row, or on the reference row you want to continue from.

  2. Pick the references you want. Each row shows a checkbox, the type you start from, the arrow, the reference type, the type at the other end, and the number of components it links.

  3. Tick a row to add it to the dataset. Untick it to remove it. The popover stays open so you can tick several.

  4. Press Esc to close the popover.

References you add from a reference row are nested under it.

Find and sort references

  • Type in Search reference and component types to narrow the list.

  • Click the gear to open Show preferences. Use the switch Hide references with 0 linked components to show or hide empty references. Under Sort by, choose Reference type A-Z, Component type A-Z or Descending instance count.

  • Each section ends with a line such as 6 references with zero instances hidden. Click Show to list them. You can still add a reference with no linked components. It shows with a count of 0.

Why two numbers can differ: The number in the popover counts the references in your loaded data. The number on the card counts the components inside this dataset.

Remove a reference

Click × on a reference row. This removes the reference and every reference below it.

  • Collapsed paths: × is disabled for references inside a collapsed path. The tooltip reads: This reference is part of a collapsed path. To remove it, delete the collapsed path in the viewpoint builder first.

  • Required paths: if a required path ran through the reference you remove, the path is removed too, and the context can widen. For example, removing a reference that limited 41 Technical Capabilities to 13 brought all 41 back. Adding the reference again does not bring the limit back. To keep a limit, set it as a required path in the Viewpoint builder.

Hide, collapse or close a dataset

  • Hide: click the eye. The card turns grey and the dataset leaves the view. If it was your only dataset, the view shows No data in the required paths until you click the eye again.

  • Collapse: click Collapse dataset to fold the card. Click Expand dataset to unfold it.

  • Close: click Close dataset (×). The dataset is removed from the view. If it was the only dataset, you return to the Home page.

Fine-tune a dataset in the Viewpoint builder

Click the gear on a card to open Edit dataset. It has five steps on the left, a Dataset metamodel graph in the middle and the controls for the current step on the right. Each step shows a number once it holds something.

Step

What you do

Select context component

Choose the starting components, as described above.

Select references

Click a type in the graph, then tick the references for it. Click a type other than the context type and use the trash icon to remove it. Use Include descendants to add every level below the context components.

Add filters

Set rules on a type. Choose whether components must match any or all of the rules, then set a Type, an operator and a value. Click Add another filter for more.

Required paths

Components that don't match a required path are left out of the dataset. Click a type in the graph to add a path from the context type to it. The counts in the graph update straight away. Use the trash icon to remove a path.

Collapse paths

Hide the data between two types. See below.

Click Update dataset to apply your changes to the view, or Cancel & exit to discard them. To keep the result, save it as a viewpoint. See How to Customize, Save, and Share Views in the New Viewpoint Builder.

Collapse a path

A collapsed path hides everything between two component types and shows a single step in its place.

  1. Go to Collapse paths and click Collapse a path.

  2. In the graph, click the type the path starts from, then the type it ends at. They must be indirectly connected.

  3. Enter a Path display text. It shows where the hidden data is. It isn't part of your metamodel and you can edit it later.

  4. Click Save, then Update dataset.

The path can't hide the context type. If you try, Ardoq shows Please select a path that doesn't hide the Technical Capability context component and you can't save.

In the panel, the card now shows a Collapsed paths section with a switch for the path. Switch it off to show the full path in the card and in the view. The component count stays the same. In the builder, use is active to do the same, Close full path to show or hide the steps inside the path, and the pencil and trash icons to edit or delete it.

Browse components

Open the Components tab to see every component in the view.

  • Type in Search open components to find one.

  • Click the up-down arrows to sort by Order, Name, Ardoq ID, Parent, Type, Created, Last updated or Document URL.

  • Click the branch icon to work with scenarios: Create scenario from view, Create scenario from selection or Add selection to scenario. The last two need a selection. See Getting Started With Scenarios.

Good to know

  • Several datasets. With more than one dataset open, you can't save the combined view as a viewpoint.

  • Counts follow your changes. The component count on each card updates when you add or remove references, change filters or change required paths.

  • Hiding doesn't delete. Hiding or collapsing a dataset doesn't change its content.
